Biomass energy supply ratio of the total world energy consumption is between 10 and 15%. In some industrialized countries, biomass combustion contributes to about 50–90% of their energy. The range of composition of lignocellulosic biomasses (agricultural, forestry or wood transformation residues, domestic or industrial organic wastes, short rotation coppice…) is a major problem when it comes to controlling a combustion process. Moreover, the instability of green matter makes it a tricky material for industrial energy production processes. Thermogravimetry allows acquiring data on biomass decomposition (combustion, torrefaction or pyrolysis) steps involving mass losses. Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) detects all the heat effects of the sample, and volatiles can be transferred to gas analyzers for identification. Biodiesel production from vegetables oils or waste fats has been applied for more than thirty years, but has generated new interest thanks to the development of new reaction routes and catalysts. However, technical barriers such as inconsistant fuel quality and immature conversion technologies need to be overcome in order to set up biodiesel as a key fuel for a sustainable worldwide transportation system. Heat release rate vs. time data obtained by isothermal calorimetry can lead to key information about biodiesel synthesis reaction schemes and kinetics, especially when the calorimeter can be operated at different temperatures, and when it allows simultaneous acquisition of other parameters (pH, pressure, UV/vis, FTIR, Raman spectra). |

See more. |
