Nanometer scaled materials (nanocrystals, nanotubes, nanospheres, nanocomposites,…) can enhance the mechanical, electrical, magnetic, optical, or chemical properties of conventional materials, and help in understanding small scale physical effects because of their intermediate size between bulk materials and atomic structures.

With its high-sensitivity and high-temperature (up to 2400°C) thermal analyzers, SETARAM offers a wide range of systems that are specially designed for R & D on metals and alloys. Additional accessories and systems allow thermal measurements in special atmospheres (oxidative, damp, corrosive, etc.).

Ceramic materials (technical or refractory) are inorganic and non-metallic. Usually they are shaped from the "green body" at room temperature and acquire their typical properties during a sintering process at high temperatures. Thermogravimetry and calorimetry are perfect tools for complete characterization and understanding of ceramics materials. Together with DTAand dilatometry, sintering processes can be studied and optimized.

The methods to build time resistant architectural structures using blends of mineral has been known since roman times. But new cement or concrete formulations still need to be tested in order to be developed for more and more challenging applications (like the construction of pipes for deep offshore oil or gas extraction) or to decrease their cost (for instance through the insertion of fly ashes, vegetals or different types of wastes). Isothermal microcalorimetry focuses on cement or plaster setting kinetics and scheme, while thermogravimetry and coupled techniques focus more on compositional analyses.

Although glass is a very common material, its increasing technicality for special applications, and issues linked with its worldwide scale manufacturing requires state of the art analytic tools.
Apart from the famous glass transition temperature, which corresponds to the softening of the glass, DSC can become a key technique to study melting, crystallization and other phase transitions.

Minéraux

Minéraux

General thermal characterization of minerals (clays, feldspars, gypsum, …) is necessary to understand their structure or change of structure with time and structure. It can for example lead to key information for the understanding of the formation of geological layers.
Valorisation of widely available minerals also often require thermal processes that need to be understood and optimized thanks to thermal analysis data (ex: in the cement industry).
