WEBINAR: INNOVATIVE CALORIMETRY SOLUTIONS WITH HIGH PRESSURE, STIRRED CELLS

High pressure calorimetry is a widespread technique for the characterization of materials and their reactions under process-like conditions for many applications. For example, the energy industry use it for gas hydrates formation / dissociation studies in the context of flow assurance or energy storage. The process safety field use it to produce thermodynamic data at the laboratory scale that can be used to design safe production processes.

After quickly introducing the calorimeters range of SETARAM Instrumentation, the presentation will focus on new high pressure cells with the capability of mechanically stirring the measured sample or reaction medium. As it will be showed with examples, this new type of cells solves a number of limitations of the currently available technologies. They have been developed and patented by the University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour, and licensed to SETARAM Instrumentation for their industrialization.

The webinar will be valuable for the researcher or engineers interested in high pressure calorimetry.

WEBINAR: CATALYSTS, ADSORBENTS, POROUS MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION: HOW CAN CALORIMETRY AND THERMAL METHODS HELP?

Calorimetry and thermal methods are interesting characterization techniques as they allow porous materials users to have access to data like sorption capacity and sorption kinetics, which are related to the efficiency of the material. Additionally, they can provide key information about the energetics of interaction between a porous material and a test gas or liquid, and about the material’s surface properties. Many types of nano, micro or meso porous materials can be investigated, including Metal Organic Frameworks, zeolites, porous silica, activated carbons, etc…

After quickly introducing each technique, the presentation will focus on examples illustrating the different solutions to the different characterization challenges.

The webinar will be valuable for the researcher or engineers interested in characterizing CATALYSTS, ADSORBENTS, POROUS MATERIALS.

WEBINAR: NEW EQUIPMENT FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOC) SORPTION BY THERMOGRAVIMETRY

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) has become one of the main concerns of numerous industries (transport, aerospace..) Due to their major impact on the environment and human health, international policies have become more and more restrictive with regard to VOC emissions.

Thermogravimetry is a key technique to characterize VOC sorption. However, the analysis of VOC remains a challenge in view of their high boiling temperature and their reactivity. In this context, the SETSYS Evolution has been adapted for the assessment of sorption capacities and kinetics of a couple adsorbent/ vapour from vacuum to atmospheric pressure. In this webinar, we will explore this new equipment through different applications.

ONE DAY FREE WORKSHOP ON THERMAL ANALYSIS AND CALORIMETRY

HIGH PRESSURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE TECHNOLOGIES AND APPLICATIONS

DATE
September 6, 2018
9:45- 16:00

PLACE
Institut für Physikalische Chemie,
TU Bergakademie Freiberg,
Germany

WORKSHOP
This one day seminar aims at introducing the available technologies, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), evolved gas analysis (EGA), thermo mechanical analysis (TMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Calvet calorimetry, high sensitivity calorimetry, and drop calorimetry. Examples will be presented, illustrating the above mentioned applications of these techniques, and the agenda will include significant times for exchanges between participants and presenters.

WHY?

Thermal analysis and calorimetry are classical materials characterization techniques. They give insights in the materials thermophysical properties, crystalline state, thermal stabilities, reactivity, surface properties, composition, etc.
At high pressures, up to 1 000 bar, they are used in the energy and environment field to study biomass pyrolysis or gasification, gas capture or storage (hydrogen, CO2…), porous materials surface properties, oil and gas flow assurance in pipelines, etc. They are also used to study the behavior of organic or inorganic materials used in high pressure processes.
At high temperatures, up to 2 400 °C, they are used to detect phase transitions and build phase diagrams, study gaseous corrosion and other gas-solid reactions, measure heat capacities, thermal expansion coefficients, sintering or densification phenomena, in order to understand the behavior of materials that are exposed purposively or accidentally up to very high temperatures.

PARTICIPANTS
The school is addressed to PhD students, Post-docs, researchers, engineers, technical staff and technologists, belonging to academic structures as well as to private companies, already working or interested to orient their future research in the field of thermal analysis and calorimetry, and which wish to acquire skill in such methods applied to the characterization of materials. There will be two parallel sessions (one in French, one in English) in two different classrooms.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
The course is intended to fill the gap between the basic thermodynamic and kinetics concepts acquired by the students during their academic formation, and the use of experimental techniques such as thermal analysis and calorimetry to answer practical questions. The course will give the students insight into the different thermal and calorimetric methods which can be employed in studies aimed at characterizing the physico-chemical properties of materials. The course will give also the basic concepts for the physico-chemical comprehension of the relevant phenomena (adsorption/desorption, melting, crystallization, phase transitions, chemical interactions and reactions,…) .

TEACHING FACILITIES
• Lectures (Power Point slides in English, lessons both in English and French)
• Hands-on (small groups of students)
• Workshops and Round tables
• Poster presentations by the participants
• Two guided visits to calorimetry and thermal analysis laboratories (2 academic and 1 industrial)
• Distribution of a hard copy of the teaching material
• Creation of a web-site as an interactive platform, aimed at allowing the participants to ask questions and communicate each other (for a period of 3-6 months after the end of the School)

PROGRAM
A detailed schedule will be soon available on the website.
(Photos of the calorimetry school which was held in June 2018 can still be seen on http://calo.catalyse.cnrs.fr)

TEACHERS
12 teachers from France and various European countries among the most well-known specialists in calorimetry and thermal analysis techniques, speaking fluently both French and English, will give lessons and advices during the school.
Lessons will be given in parallel sessions in French and in English.
